Dynamic compaction is a ground improvement method where a crawler crane drops a 10 to 30 ton steel tamper from 30 to 80 feet onto the ground on a pre-engineered grid. The impact energy densifies loose sands and fills, typically improving the ground 10 to 35 feet deep, so structures can be supported on shallow foundations instead of deep foundations.

Rock punching is the Florida trade term for dynamic replacement: the tamper punches through soft surface soils like muck and organics, and the craters are backfilled with rock that is pounded down until it bears on competent strata. The result is a field of stone columns reinforcing the soft ground.
